Operating seamlessly alongside our English policy debate division throughout the program year, Debate en Español debaters engage in spirited competition at tournaments, scrimmages, Debate Academies, and other BDL programming. During tournaments, Debate en Español rounds are conducted entirely in Spanish, from the debates themselves to the judging process. We’ve served over 600 students across 18 high schools all throughout Boston Public Schools. Our impact is keenly felt in academic circles, as our debaters consistently demonstrate that fluency in Spanish and the capacity for rigorous research are skills that propel them toward success in their future careers.
Goals of Debate en Español:
Foster opportunities for students to engage in critical discourse and complex ideas in Spanish within BDL programming.
Build the debate skills of native Spanish speakers in their L1 (first language) from a Novice to a Varsity debate level.
Provide an inclusive, joyful community that centers and celebrates Spanish and Spanish-speaking cultures.
Empower debaters with the proficiency to communicate and conduct academic research in Spanish, enhancing their competitive edge in their professional journeys.
Debate en Español in the Community
Our impact stretches beyond the debate room, with debaters participating in city-wide, high-impact community builders:
Let’s Hear from the Community!
