All teachers and instructional coaches interested in what debate-inspired learning can offer young people—from those experienced in debate-inspired classroom practices to those brand new to the work—are encouraged to engage in this professional learning.
In this monthly Virtual PD series, educators will gain:
The structure of the PD series is designed to give educators a chance to try out strategies and approaches as learners, and debrief as educators. It privileges teachers being leaders as well as learners, and sharing expertise and insights with each other. Sessions are two hours and will include:
There are 3 virtual PD sessions, and educators can register for just one, two, or all three. Educators will gain access to all of the PD materials for the sessions they attend, including planning resources and content examples for the activities practiced in that session. Educators who complete all 3 virtual PD sessions will gain access to a comprehensive folder of Debate-Inspired Classrooms resources.

The BDL is launching its first-ever School Year Virtual Debate-Inspired Grad Class, which will run this school year through June. The purpose of this course is for:
The course will involve cohort learning, as well as one-on-one coaching, all virtual. It is the first time that ongoing professional development and coaching is accessible to teachers beyond our DI Classrooms partner schools and beyond the Boston area! The structure of the course includes:

The cost for participating in the grad class is $2,000/teacher. This cost covers participation in the yearlong course; access to the full suite of Debate-Inspired Classrooms electronic resources; and grad course fee to Framingham State University.

In 2021, Kim Willingham was named Executive Director – the first woman and first Black leader – of the Boston Debate League. Before being named ED, Kim served as the BDL’s Director of Culture and Engagement and prior to that as an Instructional Coach on the Debate-Inspired Classrooms team. Throughout her 20+ years in education, Kim has held multiple leadership positions. She began her career as a Teach for America Corps Member in the Crescent City – New Orleans, LA – where she taught 6th grade ELA and Social Studies. Kim earned an EdM from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BS from Eastern Michigan University. Her experience also includes several years in school leadership and education consulting. Originally from the Motor City, she now resides in Dorchester with her two children. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time in nature. Kim is grateful for the joy she gets to experience daily working with the students, teachers, volunteers, and staff of the BDL community.
