After a year of the historic joint Spanish-language tournament between the Boston Debate League (BDL) and the Minnesota Urban Debate League (MNUDL), the two leagues came together again to hold the second tournament, which took place at Central High School. On this occasion, the Boston Debate League was represented by eight high-caliber debaters from Fenway High, Boston International Newcomers Academy (BINCA), Brighton High and Margarita Muñiz Academy. It is worth mentioning that Marcela de Souza, who last year participated as a debater from Everett High, this time returned as a chaperone and tournament judge providing her vast knowledge of argumentation to the students.
Like any other tournament, this inter-league tournament was an opportunity for students to bring out their skills in public speaking, argumentation and persuasion, but also to celebrate and share their language and culture with other students and create a sense of community.
Prior to the tournament, the debaters in our league took every opportunity to prepare. Over the course of two weeks, this group of students participated in workshops on debate style and the topic to be debated. Even hours before the tournament, the participants were fine-tuning their arguments.
During the tournament, the students showed what they were made of. They presented clear and concise arguments that impressed both the Minnesota debaters and the judges. But they weren’t the only ones who put their best foot forward; the MNUDL participants also demonstrated their hard work and growth since the last encounter. Such was the growth that I awarded a perfect score (20/20 points) as a speaker to Jose Vilchis-Cortez.
Our student group was also recognized at the awards ceremony. Güelinton Ramos, a senior student of BINCA, placed at the top of the best speakers. Congratulations, Güelinton! Also, the BDL would like to extend its congratulations to the winners of the tournament, who this time belong to MNDUL.
Outside of the tournament, the BDL students had the opportunity to visit the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, where both debaters and chaperones were fascinated by the size of the works of art. They also explored the immense Mall of America, a mall that would take days to explore in its entirety.
With the event coming to a close, BDL continues to move toward its goal of providing Spanish debaters with opportunities to connect with the Spanish debate community nationwide. The relationship established between MNDUL and BDL not only strengthens our bonds but also provides us with a platform to promote Spanish debate at a national level. This event marks a significant step toward the first Spanish debate tournament among urban debate leagues. It’s an exciting time in our commitment to the growth and diversification of debate in our community!
