Summer at BDL
Every summer, before the start of the next debate season, the Boston Debate League hosts a series of summer learning communities for debaters, coaches, and teachers through our Debate Camp, Summer Coach Camp, and Grad Class. Join us this summer to learn a new skill, identify strategies to foster an engaged debate team or deepen your insights and reflections about your own practice – all while having a little fun! The Boston Debate League’s Debate Camp provides an excellent opportunity for students to spend time this summer engaged in debate and argumentation, to develop their public speaking and leadership skills, and to learn about the Policy Debate topic for next year. Learn more | Register
The Boston Debate League’s Debate-Inspired Educator Summer Institute for educators in Boston and beyond. The Institute will take place on August 21-22 at Suffolk University. It will feature introductory and advanced workshops on debate-inspired classroom strategies, taught by teachers, for teachers; a series of workshops for policy debate coaches, preparing coaches for the 2024-25 resolution and cases; and opportunities to learn and be inspired with a community of debate-inspired educators. The Boston Debate League’s Coach Crash Course provides debate coaches who were unable to attend the Debate-Inspired Educator Institute an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming debate season, build their debate knowledge and coaching skills, and be in a learning community with other amazing debate coaches. In 2021, Kim Willingham was named Executive Director – the first woman and first Black leader – of the Boston Debate League. Before being named ED, Kim served as the BDL’s Director of Culture and Engagement and prior to that as an Instructional Coach on the Debate-Inspired Classrooms team. Throughout her 20+ years in education, Kim has held multiple leadership positions. She began her career as a Teach for America Corps Member in the Crescent City – New Orleans, LA – where she taught 6th grade ELA and Social Studies. Kim earned an EdM from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BS from Eastern Michigan University. Her experience also includes several years in school leadership and education consulting. Originally from the Motor City, she now resides in Dorchester with her two children. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time in nature. Kim is grateful for the joy she gets to experience daily working with the students, teachers, volunteers, and staff of the BDL community.
